Bird Forecast—SUMMER 2026 Re-Cap

Summer is quickly fading as the songsters have gone quiet and fall migrants are slipping thorough Montana. Suddenly all the birds that were waking us up an hour before sunrise are silent. During the day the sound of the young Black-headed Grosbeaks has gone as well, although one is stll slipping into the feeder area for a snack of sunflower seeds. The Northern House Wrens are stll around but surprisingly quiet. The singing of the Vesper, Savannah and Clay-colored Sparrows has been reduced to a “chip”. If I’m lucky I see one now and then. The young Red-tail Hawks, Merlins have all spread out rarely to be seen or heard. The Cooper’s Hawk family that we watched from the final nest building to the 2 surviving fledglings catching their own meals are also tough to find now. What a summer. Although we didn’t have American Kestrels nestng in the box

Christmas Bird Count!

Saturday, Dec. 14

The date is Saturday, Dec. 14 with Sunday, Dec.15 as our alternate date. We hope you can join us in this annual citizen science event. It will be National Audubon’s 125th CBC and UMBA’s 51st.

Once again, we hope there will be lots of folks counting the birds at their yard feeders and contacting Nora Gray with your counts. Our December 9 chapter meeting will feature a winter bird ID review to tune up our winter birding skills. Please contact Nora if you can help this year. More details will be found in the November and December newsletter.

Save the date for the 2025 Wings Across the Big Sky Birding Festival

Though next summer seems far away, we’re already hard at work planning the next Wings Across the Big Sky Birding Festival!

The festival will be held in Missoula, May 30 – June 1 2025. Montana Audubon is partnering with local chapter Five Valleys Audubon Society to host the festival, which will feature local field trips, a riveting keynote speaker, and engaging presentations. We’re excited to share more details as soon as they’re fi- nalized!

More information coming soon, and keep an eye out for registration brochures in March 2025.

Curlews and Sand Fleas

By Steve Leathe

One of the most interesting things about birding is the unanticipated things one learns about the natural world by simply watching birds and their surprising behavior.  My wife and I went to the Texas coast two winters ago and had the opportunity to visit the Padre Island National Seashore, which is one of only 10 national seashores in the USA.  It is a beautiful place with nearly 70 miles of undeveloped beach on a major migratory pathway where 380 species of birds have been identified.  National Seashores are a great idea, and five threatened or endangered sea turtle species nest at Padre Island.

Preventing Window Strikes

How this “Bird-Friendly Yard” Site is Different

Most bird-friendly yard websites only urge homeowners to add native plants to increase songbird survival. Of course, this site does also. But the other sites do not show homeowners how to make their yard safe for birds. This website does.
